Why make burbot bashing an annual tradition at Flaming Gorge? The illegally stocked fish is having a devastating effect on the Flaming Gorge fishery. Burbot are a freshwater cod that is actually native to waters east of the continental divide. In response to the threat of this unwelcome invader, multiple agencies have joined to host the annual Burbot Bash, the ice fishing derby held in January of every year. “We are excited about using the Burbot Bash as a forum to increase public awareness of this threat to the Flaming Gorge fishery,” shares President of the Flaming Gorge Chamber of Commerce Mark Wilson. “It is also a great way to introduce anglers to the family-friendly sport of ice fishing that is so popular in Flaming Gorge.” Unlike other species, there is no catch limit for burbot on Flaming Gorge and both Wyoming and Utah game officials encourage anglers to harvest as many as possible. The advantage of joining the fun during the Burbot Bash event is the chance for some serious prize money. Visit
