The Uintah High School wrestling team takes competition seriously and it paid off over the weekend at the Tournament of Champions in Vernal. Out of 28 teams, the Utes took 1st place with a team combined total of 223 points. Juab came in 2nd and Delta 3rd. Other teams from the region competed as well. Moffat County placed 10th, Duchesne placed 13th, Union placed 18th, Rifle placed 20th, and Meeker 22nd. 28 teams attended and came from all over Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. Western Park Manager Derk Hatch said this year’s tournament had a huge turnout with the best schools represented which made for some tough competition. He estimated that well over 2000 people attended whether on the floor, in the wings, or in the stands. Uintah head coach Gregg Stensgard said that on Friday his varsity team was down by over 30 points and really had to battle back to take the number 1 spot. “As coaches we had a great talk with the kids about staying the course and they found ways to win big matches at big times,” shares Coach Stensgard. “It was a great tournament and a fun finish for us.”
