Bear Safety Message For Fort Duchesne And Surrounding Communities

The Ute Indian Tribe Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement has a Public Service Announcement regarding bear safety in residential areas of Fort Duchesne and surrounding communities: Due to increased sightings of multiple bears – including at tribal buildings and community spaces – in residential neighborhoods, please review and follow these important safety guidelines: Never approach, feed, or attempt to interact with bears – even from a distance. More than one bear has been reported in the area. If you unexpectedly encounter a bear, stay calm and do not run, back away slowly while facing the bear, speak in a calm and firm voice, and make yourself look larger by raising your arms. If the bear does not leave, continue to back away and seek shelter indoors if possible. Secure all garbage, compost, and food sources. Store food, trash, and pet food indoors or in bear-resistant containers. Put garbage out on the morning of collection, not the night before. Keep pets supervised and on a leash when outside. Bring pet food and water dishes indoors, especially at night. Supervise children when they play outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk. If you spot a bear, do not try to scare it away yourself. Move indoors and report the sighting immediately by calling 435-722-5511 or after 5pm call 435-722-2911.
