An amazing event is happening this month in Detroit, Michigan, and a Vernal man is there participating. According to a news release from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 84-year-old Douglas Hatch, a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, is among around 500 Veterans participating in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games. The competitors showcase their talents through events such as basketball, softball, and wheelchair rugby. “The Wheelchair Games epitomizes the strength, courage, and determination of our Veterans,” shares Dave Tostenrude, Director of the National Veterans Wheelchair Games. “I’m excited for them to have this impactful experience as part of their health care journey.” Since 1981, the Wheelchair Games have empowered Veterans to live more independent and active lives.
