A Basin tradition is here again and will not disappoint this weekend. Joe and Teddy Evans hatched the idea for Women’s Day Out 19 years ago hoping to provide something fun for locals during the down time of winter and during a month when not a lot is going on in the Uintah Basin. All these years later, the event continues to grow and don’t let the name fool you, all are invited including men, many who come each year as the best place to find the right Valentine’s present for their sweetheart.
In a first for the organization, the youth members of the Uintah Basin Youth Chamber Orchestra were allowed to choose the theme for their next concert and what do you think they chose? Disney of course! The kids have worked hard and are excited to present their Disney themed concert on February 1st, shares Executive Director Brad Vanfleet. He admits, however, it was tricky finding orchestra music that was a good fit for the group as Disney options were limited. Still, Vanfleet is happy for the experience and invites the public to come enjoy an evening of beautiful, fun music put on by these talented youth.
Collecting antlers that fall to the ground, or sheds, is a very popular hobby in the Uintah Basin. Some families have even made it a family tradition which the Division of Wildlife Resources highly encourages. That being said, the DWR wants to remind all that if you want to look for sheds anytime between February 1st and April 15th you need to take the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Antler Gathering Ethics course. The reason is this is a very tough time of year for deer, elk, and moose and it’s important for people to minimize their impact on the animals.

Uintah Basin Healthcare scored a perfect 100 on their Energy Star certification for the Uintah Basin Medical Center. By earning the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR® certification, UBMC is continuing a legacy of energy efficiency and savings. The certification verifies that the building performs in the top 25 percent of buildings across the nation. On average such certified buildings use 35 percent less energy, cause 35 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and are less expensive to operate.
Ashley Regional Medical Center wants all to know the importance of good sleep. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that a third of U.S. adults get less than the recommended amount of sleep. According to Shelly Sorenesen, the sleep specialist with Ashley Regional Medical Center, “many people don’t connect the dots between the quality of their sleep and the quality of their overall health. Most adults need at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night to maintain good health.”
A rare Brachiosaurus bone is now at home at the Utah Field House of Natural History in Vernal. The Utah Department of Natural Resources issued a press release explaining that a team of paleontologists, including some from Vernal, recovered the 6-foot 7-inch humerus bone belonging to the 30-ton dinosaur from the desert of southern Utah.
It was standing room only in the Uintah County Commission Chambers on Wednesday morning when the Uintah County Commission voted unanimously to pass Ordinance No. 01-27-2002 O2, designating Uintah County as the first Second Amendment Sanctuary County in the state of Utah.
Uintah County is exploring the possibility of becoming a Second Amendment sanctuary county. During the Monday Commission meeting, Chief Deputy Attorney Jonathan Stearmer explained that Commissioner Bart Haslem approached him about the idea several weeks ago and Monday started the deliberation of the draft ordinance on the subject. Uintah County Sheriff Steve Labrum expressed his support, sharing that, as a gun advocate, he believes it is the right thing to be forward thinking and maintain this right within Uintah County.
Colorado Parks & Wildlife officials have confirmed that a group of wolves are now residing in northwest Colorado. Wildlife officers discovered large wolf-like tracks surrounding an animal carcass in the northwest corner of Moffat County on January 19th. While attempting to locate the wolves, the wildlife officers heard distinct howls and using binoculars were able to see approximately 6 wolves about 2 miles from where the carcass was located.
