Everything—or everyone—is not as they seem at the outset of Larry Shue’s comedy, The Foreigner. The 1984 production may benefit from its status as a lesser-known play, with lots of surprises for theater-goers unfamiliar with the story. The rural setting of a homey lakeside fishing lodge will feel relatable to many Vernalites. Wood paneling, leather couches, and hunting trophies recall the antiquated feel of many a childhood family vacation. The small cast of seven quickly becomes intimate, and the chatty innkeeper will put you right at ease. It might almost feel like you’ve seen this before. You haven’t.

Christmas is around the corner and all the wonderful family traditions are showing up on the calendar. One such tradition is going into the forest and cutting down your own Christmas tree and permits will soon be going on sale. Ashley National Forest reminds people that no cutting is permitted within 200 feet of lakes and streams, roads, campgrounds, picnic areas, administrative sites, summer home areas, or in designated closed areas laid out on tree cutting maps.

The cold may keep some inside but we can still expect little ghosts, princesses, superheroes, and zombies out enjoying the Halloween holiday. The American Safety Council created the following fun acronym ‘SCARE SAFE’ to help trick-or-treaters and their parents be safe while out. Stay in groups. Costumes should fit well and be flame resistant. Always test makeup. Remember to look both ways when crossing streets. Examine all treats before eating.

Just one week after Roosevelt City Manager Ryan Snow announced his resignation, the Roosevelt City Assistant City Manager has followed suit. Assistant Manager and Finance Director John Zilles announced on Monday, October 28th, that he will resign from his position effective November 16th. Zilles shared the following in his resignation letter: “This is a decision that has come as a matter of prayer for quite some time. [It] comes after about 4 ½ years of a lot of hard work and dedication to help this city make immense improvements.

Don’t let cold weather keep you from enjoying Halloween activities! The Halloween Mayor’s Walk held each year outside the Uintah Community Center is moving to Plan B with the arrival of cold, snowy weather. “The trick or treating will be held inside, upstairs, along the track,” shares Uintah Recreation District. “You will enter through the front and make your way upstairs. The carnival will still be held in the gymnasium. Please note that there won’t be enough room upstairs to accommodate strollers, but we will have stroller parking available when you enter the building.

It is that time of year when children (and even adults) put on costumes, go outside into the cold, and take part in the Halloween tradition of trick or treating. The Uintah Basin has several options for kids to get their candy on this Halloween. Uintah Basin Healthcare is inviting kids to the Villa at 265 North 300 West in Roosevelt from 2pm to 4pm. The Trick-or-Treat Halloween Parade will be returning to Main Street in Roosevelt City. Pre-school children will start trick or treating at 3pm.

The Vernal Community Holly Days is fast approaching, just a little over a month away. Vernal City is getting the word out that this Basin tradition is looking for volunteers. It is a free family-friendly event that includes a Parade of Lights, gingerbread house contest, prize giveaways and so much more. The festival is 100% reliant on volunteers and generous sponsors.
