UBIC Kicking Off 2018 Events

While the main days for Uintah Basin in Celebration aren’t until next week, there are events starting today. The Junior Golf Tournament starts at the Roosevelt Golf Course at 9am and a softball coed all night tournament starts at 6pm at Constitution Park. A night golf adult tournament is also scheduled for tonight at the Roosevelt Golf Course at 9pm. The Miss Uintah Basin and Outstanding Teen pageant is being held at the Roosevelt Junior High School at 7pm on Saturday. For a complete list of UBIC events, visit ubic.info. The evening program on August 2nd will include the Ute Tribe program, UBIC royalty, and local talent. The evening program for August 3rd will include UHS Cheer, Drill, and Theater performances as well as the talent show winners and the band Barnyard Hippies. The grand finale on August 4th will include opening band Nebo Road and the main event Charlie Worsham, followed by fireworks.

Fires continue to burn in neighboring Colorado. The Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office reports that the lightning caused Sulphur Fire is located 5 miles north of Meeker. It started July 22nd and was last reported at 671 acres in oak brush and tall grass. On Thursday it was reported as 8 percent containment.

On Sunday, July 22nd, a flash flood flowed through the area south of the Dollar Ridge Fire burn scar, stranding 50 people and washing out roadways. Thankfully all those stranded were saved and there was no serious damage to the structures in the area but Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that the outcome may not be so positive next time.

The annual blue-green algal bloom has started at Matt Warner Reservoir. According to DWR Conservation Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby, the Department of Environmental Quality is visiting Matt Warner today to assess the situation. Latest Unemployment Numbers by County

The Department of Workforce Services released the latest unemployment numbers this week and there’s been little change for local counties. Daggett County remains at 4.6 percent unemployment which is down from one year ago at 5.2 percent. Duchesne County ticked up a tenth of a percent to 4.6 percent, having been at 5.5 percent one year prior. Uintah County remained at 4.8 percent, down from 6 percent one year ago. State unemployment stayed at 3 percent from the month before and from 3.3 percent one year ago. National unemployment registered at 4 percent, which is also down from one year ago when it was at 4.3 percent. Utah’s private sector employment grew by 3.6 percent over the year, adding 44,200 positions to the economy. The largest private sector employment increases were in Trade, Transportation, and Utilities. Next was in Professional and Business Services.

West Raven Fire Burns on BLM Land Near Utah/Colorado Border

A fire is burning south of Highway 40 near the Utah/Colorado border. According to the Uintah Basin Interagency Fire Center, the call came in on the West Raven Fire at 1:28pm on Wednesday. It is burning in grass, brush, pinion, and juniper 5 miles south of Highway 40 on the Old Bonanza Highway.
