It’s been a nerve wracking few days in western Colorado dealing with wildfires and mudslides. On Monday at about 11am, a report was called in of smoke spotted off of Highway 13 about 19 miles south of Meeker in Rio Blanco County. The View Fire was last reported at 20 acres. Crews were also called to the Skull Creek Fire about 14 miles north of Rangely in Moffat County. Multiple agencies responded with added urgency as the fire was burning near the Skull Creek Community. Seven houses were initially put on pre-evacuation notice and 20 structures were threatened. Meanwhile on Tuesday, a road closure notification was issued for both lanes of County Road 5 in Rio Blanco County due to a mudslide between Highway 64 and mile marker 37. As of 12:5am on Wednesday, both directions of the highway were opened up but all drivers are urged to proceed with caution.
