The Utah Department of Health made their own announcement this week following Friday’s report from the CDC and FDA that serious lung illnesses are being caused by e-cigarettes and vaping. “Public health agencies and health care providers in Utah are investigating several cases of severe lung disease in people who vape nicotine or THC products,” shares the Utah Department of Health. “As of Monday, September 9th, 35 cases associated with vaping nicotine, THC, or both have been reported in Utah, with an additional 12 potential cases being investigated. Similar cases have been reported in other states throughout the country, and officials in Utah are coordinating with the appropriate state and federal officials.” Utah health officials share that patients are experiencing symptoms including cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, and fatigue and 94 percent of patients have required hospitalization. While health has been improved following treatment, it remains unknown what the long term health effects will be. While vaping has been advertised as a “safer alternative” to smoking, the CDC states that they are not safe for youth, young adults, pregnant women, or adults who do not currently use tobacco products. Additional research is needed to know the full dangers and long-term risks of vaping and e-cigarettes. As these products are popular among teens, TriCounty Health Department is “incorporating important educational material into their outreach when speaking to teens and schools about the risks of nicotine and vaping.”
