Thanks to a grant from the National Security Agency and National Science Foundation, local middle school girls were able to enjoy a unique camp that was the only one offered in the state of Utah. “We chose to do an all girls camp to help inspire girls to go into STEM fields, particularly in cybersecurity, where the field is 97 percent male,” shares Uintah High School teacher Cynthia White, adviser for the Girls Who Code Club.
The GenCyber Camp held June 17th through the 21st at the Maeser Training Center
focused on a real-life cybercrime scenario in the Uintah Basin. “This year’s camp focused on the six cybersecurity concepts of confidentiality, integrity, availability, keep it simple, defense in depth, and thinking like an adversary,” shares the Uintah School District. “The camp also taught coding with handheld, programmable micro-computers known as micro:bits, which the girls were able to keep.” Uintah High computer science teacher Kami Elison and academic coach Rebekah Jones taught the camp along with the help of other guest instructors.
