Uintah County Sheriff’s Office Issues Scam Alert

A reality of modern life is the presence of scammers using every variety of methods to take money from unsuspecting victims. The Uintah County Sheriff’s Office is the latest agency to issue a scam alert hoping to help you protect your hard earned money. “The Uintah County Sheriff’s Office has recently investigated multiple fraud cases involving scammers impersonating banks,” shares the announcement. “In these scams, the caller claims to be from your bank and says there is fraud on your account. They tell you to move your money immediately to ‘keep it safe’. Then they have you transfer it using methods like wire transfer, Apple cash, gift or prepaid cards, bitcoin or cryptocurrency, or other forms of electronic transfers.” Stop. Do not transfer your money. A legitimate bank will not call you and tell you to move your money to another account. If you receive a call like this, hang up and verify independently and directly with your bank. Be sure to warn family and friends who may be vulnerable to these types of financial scams.
