The Special Olympics is celebrating 50 years as an organization and Uintah Basin athletes are celebrating by competing in the local games. Around 150 competitors from the Roosevelt, Myton, and Vernal area competed in the track and field events on Wednesday at Uintah High School. The event included wheelchair races, walking, running, relays, and throwing competitions. Earlier this month, torch runs were held in Vernal and Roosevelt as well as the swimming competitions with many volunteers and organizations helping make it all possible. “Special Olympics means everything to the kids,” shares Darla Crowther, head of delegation for the Uintah Dinos. “The support we get locally is so amazing. The kids just love participating and for those going out to the state games, it is like a vacation to them, going out of town and having a fun thing to do.” The state games are being held June 8th and 9th at Utah Valley University in Orem. The Uintah Dinos from Vernal and the Basin Raptors from Roosevelt both plan to attend.
