UHP Equipment Enforcement: Tinted Windows

While Utah law permits the use of some window tint on vehicles traveling Utah roadways, Utah Highway Patrol keeps an eye out for vehicles exceeding the tint limitations. According to UHP Sgt. Kellie Oaks, the equipment enforcement emphasis for troopers this month is keeping an eye out for illegally tinted windows. “Last month, during a four hour standoff with a barricade subject,” shares Sgt. Oaks, “the vehicle had very dark tint which made it difficult to determine if the suspect had weapons that posed a threat to the officers trying to help him. Legal tint not only contributes to safer driving, particularly at night, but contributes to officer safety providing greater visibility and the ability to detect threats better.” Utah law states that all windshields are prohibited from having window tint, or other nontransparent material placed 4 inches down from the top of the windshield. The driver and front seat passenger side windows must not allow less than 43 percent light transmittance. Troopers will pull over and ticket those violating the law as they strive to provide professional police and traffic services to all people in the Uintah Basin.
