Local police departments are reminding the community to be cautious and teach your kids to take online safety seriously. Some tips they share to protect yourself online and to teach your kids include: Think before you post – Once it’s online, it’s out there forever; Keep personal info private – Never share your address, school, or phone number; Beware of strangers – Not everyone online is who they say they are; Use strong passwords – Keep accounts secure with unique passwords; Tell a trusted adult – If something feels off, speak up! Another area needing increased awareness is the issue of Sextortion. If you learn that someone is being victimized, listen to them. Tell them you are sorry that this is happening to them and that you want to help. Let them know that they are the victim of a crime. Encourage them to ask for help and see if you can help them identify a trusted adult to tell. Contact law enforcement for help if you are being targeted.
