Slough Canyon Fire More Than Triples In Size Over Weekend

The Slough Canyon Fire more than tripled in size over the weekend, and fire officials say its smoke is visible in the Uintah Basin. The Slough Canyon Fire was started on August 15th by lightning south of the Uintah County border in a remote area of the Book Cliffs in Grand County. The fire was mapped on Saturday around noon at 810 acres, by Saturday night it had more than tripled, and as of Monday morning Utah Fire Info listed the Slough Canyon Fire at 3000 acres and 0% contained. “Firefighters continue to prioritize safety while managing a full suppression strategy in the steep and rugged terrain of the canyon drainages,” shares Utah Fire Info. “Driven by strong gusts and shifting winds, the fire experienced extreme fire behavior and significant expansion across nearly every section of the perimeter. Growth has primarily pushed to the northeast, where the fire crossed the constructed dozer line on the mesa top near Slough Canyon Point and pushed into Pinto Canyon and Moonwater Canyon.” The fire is burning in a very remote area, and there are no anticipated road closures or area closures.
