Severe thunderstorms pelted northeastern Utah with hail and rain throughout
Wednesday afternoon
and evening followed by flooding in some areas. According to National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Pringle, winds in the Vernal area were recorded at 59 miles per hour and early reports of hail were as large as 1 inch in diameter though there could have been larger hail as well. Uintah County Emergency Manager Tal Ehlers reported that there was some flash flooding along Highway 121 at 4250 West in Uintah County. No homes were structurally affected, however, some front yards were flooded. The Utah Department of Transportation reported
on Wednesday night
that Highway 40 was closed in both directions as crews worked 4 miles west of Fruitland at Mile Post 58 due to a mudslide. The mudslide is in the area of the Dollar Ridge Fire burn scar.
