November 5th was Rodeo Pioneer Day in Utah and Vernal certainly has its claim of impressive rodeo pioneers to remember. Among those greats are three Vernal cowboys who are remembered and honored as rodeo trick riding pioneers. Cowboys Raymond Bascom, Earl Bascom and Weldon Bascom were even inducted into the Canadian Trick Riding Hall of Fame. These three brothers that started their lives in Vernal had successful careers as fancy trick riders or Roman standing racers. Earl Bascom was born in Vernal in 1906. Raymond and Weldon, who lived in Vernal, were both born in Naples in 1901 and 1912. The Bascom family moved to Alberta, Canada in 1914, where the Bascom boys made trick riding part of their rodeo careers.
