Losing the fish in Steinaker Reservoir isn’t what DWR biologists were hoping for but a plan is in place to ensure that the fishery be restored once work is complete to the Steinaker Dam. The Bureau of Reclamation announced last month that additional earthquake protection work will be done at the same time as the repairs to the dam and as a result the reservoir will have to be completely drained of water. “We aren’t happy about the anticipated water volume after the drawdown,” shares DWR Aquatics Manager Trina Hedrick, “but we certainly understand the need to complete the work and ensure the safety of the dam and everyone downstream of the dam.” This summer, biologists will be taking bluegill and largemouth bass from Steinaker that will then be used to restock Steinaker and Pelican Lake once projects at both waters are complete. “Taking and holding large bass and healthy bluegill will allow us to jumpstart populations,” shares Hedrick. “At Steinaker, bass and bluegill should bounce back shortly after the repairs are completed and the water level starts to come up.” For more information, call
