Phone Scammers Posing as Sheriff’s Deputies Swindling Citizens

It’s not new but a phone scam is making the rounds again spooking average citizens when the caller identifies themself as a Sheriff’s Deputy informing the victim that a warrant has been issued for their arrest for failing to report for jury duty. A Rock Springs woman recently fell victim to this scam after receiving what she felt was a convincing call from “Deputy Cook” at the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Mike Lowell says among the issues here is there is NO “Deputy Cook” employed by the Sheriff’s Office and points out that scammers often select random last names. Regardless of how convincing you feel the caller is, do not follow their instructions, do not send any amount of money. Period. Often the scammer provides details such as a fake case number connected to the courthouse in your area. “It’s all part of the scam, to make it look more convincing,” warns Sheriff Lowell. No agency of the criminal justice system is going to call to demand money or payment for fines, missed jury duty, overdue traffic tickets, or any other claim. Help spread the word to friends, family, and elderly seniors you know that may be unaware of these and other types of fraud schemes.
