KNEU 125075 years. That is how long the hospital in Roosevelt has been providing healthcare services to the Uintah Basin. It has had a unique history in those 75 years. It started as the LDS Roosevelt Hospital in 1944 but when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints “divested itself from its health care services” Duchesne County took over ownership in 1975 changing the name to Duchesne County Hospital.
Another suspect has been identified and charged in a May robbery during which a coin collection was taken from a Roosevelt residence. 26-year-old Tyjobe McCrone was already in jail in Southern Utah in an unrelated case when the warrant from Duchesne County caught up to McCrone on felony burglary charges.
The Uintah Basin has been enjoying the musical talents of Dante Zubel since his youth. He is perhaps best known for playing his cello for the Uintah Basin Orchestra and Chorus, Uintah High School, Uintah Basin Youth Chamber Orchestra, and beyond, though he plays many other instruments as well.
Back to school can be a busy time for parents and kids as sports are starting up and TriCounty Health Department has some great back to school tips to help make it through the transition.
Monarch butterflies are thought to be named after King William III of England, his secondary title being Prince of Orange. The butterflies have wings that get to 3.5 to 4.0 inches wide. Surprisingly they have a flight pattern described as “slow and sailing” and fly at 5.5 mph.
Addiction is a very real part of each and every one of our lives. On August 17 at 5:00 pm and located at the Colton Pavillion in Vernal, there will be a benefit dinner held for Be the Light Recovery Center, an organization that seeks to help those struggling with addiction and, in turn, aid those recovered in saving other addicts.
An unusual spring and summer has led to higher levels of water, a little flooding and plenty of fast currents. It falls upon the Uintah County Search and Rescue to be ready for any circumstance, which can be quite varied when the landscape of the Basin is considered.
In the same year the Basin celebrates the 150th anniversary of John Wesley Powell’s expedition of the area, it seems fitting that he would be the topic of the final lecture of the year offered by the Utah Field House of Natural History. The lecture is on “The Curious Course of the Green River and the Ideas of John Wesley Powell” by Doug Sprinkel, Utah Geologic Survey Senior Geologist.
Biologists with the Division of Wildlife Resources have plans to treat certain waters this fall in an effort to benefit cutthroat trout in the high Uintas. Biologists will conduct a final treatment in Reader Creek and will also treat Potter and East Fork Carter Creek areas on the Uintas north slope. Rotenone, a natural substance made from the roots of a tropical plant, is used to treat the waters.
Country Music is very much an American art form having its roots throughout the history of many parts of the United States. Famous documentarion, Ken Burns, has put together a documentary chronicling this unique history. In preparation for its September release, KUED and Uintah County Library are holding an evening of country music.
During the August 7th board meeting, the Uintah School Board voted to have a resolution added to Uintah County’s November 5th ballot. A Uintah School District press release explains that if the resolution is approved by the voters, the School Board plans to implement a “levy swap,” lowering its capital levy by more than what the voted levy generates for the school district for at least the next three years.
