KNEU 1250The Ute Indian Tribe has filed two complaints against the United States of America in federal court. According to a Tribe press release dated March 9th, the Ute Tribe has commenced litigation against the United States for what it calls “its blatant mismanagement of the Tribe’s Uncompahgre Reservation lands.”
In its 14th year, the Storytelling Festival hosted annually by the Uintah Schools Foundation is considered a treasured event by many locals. Thursday night the Vernal Middle School Auditorium filled with families, some who come every year and some trying the festival out for the first time.

A man known as a champion of the state parks in the state of Utah will not be soon forgotten, especially in the Uintah Basin. HCR21: Concurrent Resolution to Name a State Park After Fred Hayes unanimously passed in the House and Senate this week as a way to honor the achievements of Fred Hayes, Director of State Parks and Recreation. Mr. Hayes passed away unexpectedly at his home in Heber City last week and an outpouring of tributes have followed, including that of the Utah Legislature with HCR21 which encourages the renaming of Starvation State Park to the Fred Hayes State Park at Starvation.
Vernal City Manager Quinn Bennion took time during Wednesday’s City Council meeting to invite area residents to take advantage of the housing assistance programs administered through the Uintah Basin Association of Governments. “The reason we are involving ourselves in this is we have an aging housing stock in Vernal,” explained Bennion, who says there are areas in Vernal that could benefit from the funds available through multiple programs.
Uintah School District has issued a message on school safety measures in place in the District in light of recent school shootings and threats made at schools around the state in recent weeks. First, the District has physical security measures in place at each school that include all exterior doors remaining locked with the exception of the main door leading to the office.
With the topic of implementing fluoride into public drinking water in Uintah County comes the question of cost and cost studies are currently underway to inform the public in case this ends up on the 2018 November election ballot.
Fluoridation of public water may be among the items to be found on the November 2018 election ballot in Uintah County. According to the Uintah County Clerk/Auditor Office, an application has been received to gather signatures for “Fluoridation of the public water supplies for the Central Utah and the Ashley Valley Water Districts of Uintah County.”

Officials continue to work together making progress on the Daggett County/Dutch John agreement. An update from the Daggett County Commissioners shares that as of their February 27th meeting, an agreement is in place for Daggett County to turn all the buildings, land, and equipment – including water and sewer systems in Dutch John – over to the Dutch John township.
Smoke and burning visible in Dry Fork Canyon today are no cause for concern. According to BLM representative Kelsey Birchell, the Bureau of Land Management is implementing a 50 acre pile burn in the Dry Fork Canyon area all day Thursday.
As of now, Utah will not have a closure on the 2018 shed antler season. Most of the surrounding states are issuing a shed gathering closure, shares Division of Wildlife Resources Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer, which has the potential to flood Utah with shed hunters from surrounding states.
