Colorado lawmakers have introduced a bill that would enforce limiting student cell phone use in schools. A Craig Daily Press report shares that several western slope school districts are among those across the country that have already implemented reduced phone use policies in order to improve classroom learning as well as reduce mental health impacts of excessive screen time. Local districts would still have control over how the policy is implemented and enforced but if passed, Colorado would be the 20th state to adopt a school cell phone policy. A similar bill has also been introduced in the Utah Legislature. SB178S1 reportedly aims to minimize distractions in the classroom. According to a 2023 report from the U.S. Surgeon General’s Office, as much as 95% of youth ages 13 to 17 use social media with over ⅓ stating they use social media “almost constantly”.
