Hunters are headed to the mountains and officials are urging all to prepare ahead of time for changing weather conditions and the dangerous situations that can arise. A hunter in western Colorado found himself in a dangerous situation, providing for a reminder to all hunters. The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office reports that multiple agencies were called in to assist on a search and rescue operation on Black Mountain after a hunter became separated from his hunting party and lost. “Rapidly changing weather conditions compounded the situation, and when the hunter’s companions were unable to make contact with him, rescue efforts were initiated,” shares the report. “Fortunately, the hunter was quickly located and safely rescued in good health. As we head into the fall hunting season, we encourage everyone spending time in the backcountry to prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions. This is especially important when hunting in unfamiliar terrain. Check the weather forecast before heading out and be prepared for sudden changes. Carry appropriate clothing, food, water, navigation tools, and emergency supplies. Let someone know your planned route and expected return time. [And] maintain communication with your hunting party and establish a plan in case you become separated…A little preparation can make a significant difference.”
