The heat wave may find some moments of relief thanks to the rainfall but the storms also pose new risks. “Scattered to widespread thunderstorms remain a threat again this afternoon as monsoonal moisture lingers over the area,” shares National Weather Service. “Rainfall rates in excess of 1 inch per hour will be possible in the strongest storm and could lead to excess runoff and flash flooding of recent burn scars. Gusty outflow winds also remain a daily threat and these could trigger new storms to form.” Remember, heavy rain should be a signal that alerts you to the possibility of dangerous flood conditions. The following safety rules are recommended: During periods of heavy rain, stay away from flood-prone areas such as burn scars, stream beds, drainage ditches, and culverts. If you live or work in flood-prone areas, remain alert. Do not walk or drive through floodwater. Six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet, and two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles. Stay away from downed power lines.
