The Great Utah ShakeOut is coming up next week and the Department of Public Safety’s
Division of Emergency Management invites Utahns statewide to participate. This is the
state’s largest earthquake drill and it is scheduled for Thursday, April 17th at 10:15 a.m.
“Utah’s unique seismic risks demand serious attention,” shares the announcement. “The
Wasatch Fault Zone has a significant probability of experiencing a major earthquake in
the next 50 years. Such an event could result in fatalities, many injuries, and enormous
economic loss. With the majority of Utah’s population living near active fault lines,
earthquake preparedness is essential for all residents.” Get registered to participate by
going to ShakeOut.org/utah. Individuals, families, schools, businesses, and organizations
of all sizes are encouraged to join. When the drill begins, participants should: DROP to
the ground. Take COVER under a sturdy desk or table. HOLD ON. Many organizations
use the ShakeOut as an opportunity to review and update emergency plans, supplies, and
equipment.
