The Division of Wildlife Resources will be treating Reader Creek next week as part of an ongoing Cutthroat Trout Restoration project. Reader Creek has experienced dramatic decline in the cutthroat population due to competition and breeding with non-native trout. The decline has been so severe that the DWR decided to chemically treat the stream with rotenone to address the problem. DWR Fisheries Manager Trina Hedrick says treatments like this are done as they work to keep Cutthroat Trout off the endangered species list. This is the second treatment to Reader Creek, the first taking place a year ago. Crews will be salvaging Cutthroat from the creek this week and next ahead of the treatment. Reader Creek will be closed for treatment on August 29th and should be open by Friday or Saturday. For more information, call 435-781-WILD.
