The Duchesne City treasurer was booked into Duchesne County Jail on Tuesday and is facing felony charges related to the misuse of public funds. According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, law enforcement was informed and began investigating the possible misuse of public funds in August of 2024. City records from 2019 to 2024 were provided and showed that during those years, treasurer Kimberly Hanson as well as several other employees were either not having deductions taken out of their paychecks or were having a drastically smaller amount taken that did not cover the employee cost of medical benefits. A search warrant was sent to the insurance company handling the benefits requesting records to compare to the city records. The insurance records showed that each invoice sent to Duchesne City over that timeframe had been paid in full, even though the correct amount of funds to pay the invoice had not been withheld from the payroll. As the treasurer, Hanson was allegedly the only person who could make changes to the payroll system and was the person in charge of paying the invoice for the benefits to the insurance company. From 2019 to 2024, Hanson was able to underpay her benefits and receive approximately $21,546 dollars back in her paychecks. On January 28th, 56-year-old Kimberly Kielbasa Hanson was arrested and booked into Duchesne County Jail. Hanson is charged with 4 counts of 3rd Degree Felony Misusing Public Money and 2 counts of 2nd Degree Felony Misusing Public Money. She was ordered to be released with conditions and is scheduled for an Initial Appearance in 8th District Court on February 10th.
