Deer Population Report Ahead Of 2026 Utah Deer And Elk Hunts

It’s hard to believe but fall deer hunt planning is underway for many hunters and the Division of Wildlife Resources has shared information to make planning easier. According to their Friday news release, the deer hunting this fall will vary depending on where people are hunting but mule deer populations are showing positive trends across much of Utah. “We’re encouraged by what we’re seeing with Utah’s mule deer populations,” shares DWR Big Game Coordinator Mike Wardle. “Strong fawn production and survival have helped many of our herds grow over the past couple of years. When those favorable conditions are combined with habitat improvement projects and other work focused on mule deer, it gives these populations an opportunity to respond.” Wildlife officials also say it is a good idea to visit the Utah Hunt Planner resource before heading out into the field. “Hunters who have scouted their hunting units and spent time locating animals before the hunt begins are typically more successful at finding and harvesting an animal during their hunt,” says Wardle. “Spend time scouting, and if you haven't, consider planning multiple hunting trips during the hunting season.” For more info on what hunters should know for the 2026 hunts, visit wildlife.utah.gov
