There is never a small turnout for the Dr. Seuss birthday celebration held annually at the Uintah County Library. This year was no exception with over 1,100 partiers attending on Friday, many as participants of the 100 Books 100 Chapters Reading Program put on by the Literacy Commission. “Everyone who participates in that program gets a prize and then could earn raffle tickets for bigger prizes on top of that,” shares Literacy Commission President Kedra Rust. “The art auction last week raised about $2500 dollars and that supports the prizes for this event, for the books given out during the fair, and the Winter Tales writing contest, among other programs.” Last year there were about 600 participants in the Dr. Seuss reading program which Rust estimates was comparable to this year. Uintah County Library Director Sam Passey expressed his thanks to the Literacy Council, Vernal Rotary Club, the Library’s Teen Advisory Group, the UHS Honor Society students, local media, and local teachers who promoted or participated in the event to make it a success. Passey also thanked the local artists who donated art for the charity art auction that raised funds to purchase prizes as reading incentives.
