Colorado Hit-And-Run Pair Arrested In Vernal Scheduled In Court This Week

The two men arrested in Vernal, Utah, in August connected to a fatal hit-and-run that happened in Colorado’s Mesa County are scheduled to make their first court appearance this week. During the early morning hours of August 24th, a crash took place on Highway 139 in Colorado in which a man was sitting in the northbound lane of the roadway when he was struck and dragged 130 feet. The 35-year-old man, who was later identified by state patrol as Joey Hampton, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. 48-year-old Aaron Mackinnon was taken into custody in Vernal and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death. 44-year-old Rusty Vogt was also arrested and charged with felony accessory. Mackinnon and Vogt were extradited to Mesa County. During an initial court hearing, it was stated that while the crash was an accident, the pair left the scene, cleaned up their vehicle, and fled. They drove through Rangely where a Flock camera allegedly tracked their car ahead of their arrest in Vernal where they had a job lined up.
