Jade’s Benefit Ride; Locals Rally to Help Vernal Girl with Cancer

The community is rallying around a 4-year-old Vernal girl with cancer and her family as treatments to fight for her life begin. 4-year-old Jade Cooper has a bright smile despite being diagnosed with B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Doctors at Primary Children’s Hospital have said her treatments will realistically take 2 full years and that Jade will need to be in Salt Lake City at least once a week for treatments of at least 6 hours long. Jade’s Benefit Ride has been organized for August 26th as loved ones are asking the community to help this family in their time of need. The benefit ride begins in Vernal at the Beers Harley Davidson and makes stops in Roosevelt and Duchesne before making a final run via Wolfcreek Pass to Heber City for a catered lunch. Local Small Businesses Helped by Center for Workforce Development

When it comes to small businesses, there is more help out there than many realize. Nicole Robinson, regional manager for the Center for Workforce Development, presented at the Vernal Chamber meeting on Tuesday with a message for local businesses: come and see how their programs can help your business. The Center for Workforce Development is a service under the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and its eastern branch serves Daggett, Duchesne, Uintah, Carbon, Emery, Grand, and San Juan Counties. Robinson explained that consultations with local businesses has resulted in lucrative contracts awarded, one recently for $48,000 dollars. “My biggest challenge in the Vernal area,” shares Robinson, “is small businesses don’t know about the services we provide…Our main goal is to educate [small business owners] that we are a resource available to them.” Any small businesses interested in being mentored or that need help applying for government contracts are invited to call 435-613-5254.

Maeser is a safer place with the new Maeser fire substation opening its doors. While the official grand opening won’t take place until July 21st, trucks were parked in their new home Thursday night making the station operational. The Vernal Department will run the substation with existing equipment and volunteers. 

Fatal Crash when Roosevelt Woman Drives Wrong Way on I-70

Alcohol was a factor in a head on fatal crash on I-70 Sunday night caused by a Roosevelt woman. According to the Colorado State Patrol, 57-year-old Sarah Hartman was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-70 when her Ford Taurus hit head-on with a Chevy Impala driven by a Fruita woman near mile marker 38.

Stranded Boaters Found Safe on Flaming Gorge

A stranded party of boaters are safe after spending a night on the shore of Flaming Gorge. According to Sweetwater County Sheriff Mike Lowell, the Sheriff’s Office was contacted at about 10:45pm Sunday night by a Colorado woman in the area of Big Firehole.

High Temperatures and Fire Safety

Record heat has hit the west with areas of Nevada hitting 118 degrees and the Basin is feeling the heat as well. The unseasonable high temperatures are due to a strong high pressure over the region, shares National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Pringle.
