Willow Creek Fire North of Strawberry Reservoir Caused By Lightning
Crews have continued to diligently work on the Willow Creek Fire north of Strawberry Reservoir for nearly two weeks now. The fire was reported on June 6th and investigators have now determined it was caused by lightning. As of Sunday, the fire had burned 1,301 acres, though it had been several days since it had grown.

Vernal City Moves Forward with Wayfinding Design Agreement
Vernal City is moving forward in partnership with other cities to design, develop, and implement a wayfinding system in Uintah County. According to Vernal City Manager Quinn Bennion, the City Council approved the design contract with Landmark Design for $49,780 dollars for the development of the master plan.
Local USU Research Enables Local Industry Time for Solutions to Ozone Problem
Thanks to the USU-Uintah Basin Bingham Research Center, local industry has more time to find cost-effective solutions to the local ozone problem regulated by the EPA. Senior research scientist Huy Tran provided evidence that certain high ozone days were natural-caused exceedances and ultimately the research lead to the EPA dropping the Uintah Basin’s non-attainment level from Moderate to Marginal.

The Ute Indian Tribe has issued a 2018 Fire Restriction Order. The announcement, signed June 11th, states that fire conditions are deemed extremely hazardous, constituting a threat to life, property, and the Tribe’s natural resources.
Vernal City Council Approves Certified Tax Rate
The Vernal City Council met last week, approving a certified tax rate with a minor increase per household. The rate has an increase of $3 dollars per house per year on an average $200,000 dollar appraised value. “This rate remains among the lowest 10 percent of cities in the State for cities and towns,” shares Vernal City Manager Quinn Bennion.
Community Garden in Duchesne County; UBAOG Thanks Volunteers and Donors
The new community garden in Duchesne County is sure to bring joy and fill bellies and the Uintah Basin Association of Governments is offering thanks to the many volunteers and donors that made it possible. Volunteers from Enervest Operating were there early on with power tools and hammers in hand helping build the 15 garden beds in a single day. Workers from Peak’s Well Service reinforced the garden beds with hardware, stapled in the weed barrier, and sealed a picnic table.

Conducting an election by mail is typically uneventful in the weeks leading up to the election day but this year is the exception to the rule.
