KNEU 1250While boating is still allowed in the reservoir, the Steinaker Dam repair project is getting underway. “Boaters please be aware of the buoys that have been placed near the dam,” shares Steinaker State Park. “The area beyond them is restricted, no vessels are allowed. There is still water in the reservoir but water levels are dropping fast so boat at your own risk.
It took a team of agencies to help a group of people to safety after flash flooding in Duchesne County on Sunday. According to the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, a group of 50 people found themselves trapped by fast moving water and debris on Sunday afternoon in an area south of the Dollar Ridge Fire burn scar.
Multiple wildfires are burning on the Ute Indian Reservation. According to the ‘BIA Forestry & Wildland Fire – Uintah & Ouray Agency’, the West Wildhorse Fire started on Thursday and is located about 70 miles south of Fort Duchesne in the Wildhorse Basin area east of the Green River/Desolation Canyon. On Saturday, the Incident Commander reported the wildfire as 75 percent contained.
There will be plenty of ways to celebrate Utah’s pioneer heritage on July 24th in the Vernal area. First, the annual scout breakfast will run from 6:30 to 9:30am at the Vernal City Park Colton Pavilion. Breakfast costs $3.00 dollars per person. The 24th of July parade will run down Vernal Main Street at 10:00am.
It’s been a difficult few days on Duchesne County roads with two fatal accidents in two days, the first one involving three motorcycles on SR-35 that resulted in three fatalities. According to Utah Highway Patrol, a fatal crash also occurred on Friday on SR-191 in Indian Canyon about 8 miles south of Duchesne.
Slight growth has occurred on the Dollar Ridge Fire but containment is holding strong. Utah Fire Info shared Thursday that 13 acres of growth occurred Wednesday night and containment stayed at 85 percent.
While many animals were affected and some had to be left behind as fire quickly spread near Fruitland in early July, there is one home where over a hundred dogs were left. According to Melisa Stevenson from Furever Buddy’s Dog Rescue, 101 chihuahuas were rescued from a hoarding situation near Fruitland during the Dollar Ridge Fire evacuation.
A tragic crash involving several motorcycles took multiple lives on Thursday around 10:30am in Duchesne County at Mile Post 31 west of Hanna. The Utah Department of Public Safety reports that a group of motorcyclists were traveling northbound on SR-35 Wolf Creek Pass when one bike went down and was struck by two more bikes.

Utah Highway Patrol confirms that a man suspected of intoxication interfered on the scene of the triple fatality motorcycle accident that occurred Thursday morning on SR-35 west of Hanna. 56-year-old Bruce Joe Curry was arrested and booked into Duchesne County Jail for the offenses of Reckless Endangerment, Interfering With an Officer, Obstruction of Justice, Criminal Mischief, Intoxication, and Disorderly Conduct on July 19th at 11:27am. According to UHP, Curry was wandering through the scene, fiddling with the motorcycles, trying to take items off the bikes, and even tried to get in the ambulance where they were working on one of the victims that later died. CPR had to be stopped for a few moments as Curry was dealt with. According to the probable cause statement, the trooper had been asked by EMS to help with chest compressions because there were so many patients on scene and few medical personnel. As the officer helped, he could see Curry outside the ambulance “causing a disturbance and creating a hostile environment with witnesses and friends of the deceased and injured parties.” The officer then exited the ambulance and asked Curry to leave the scene, which he refused to do. Curry resisted arrest and two officers were needed. The officer was unable to continue assisting EMS with the female crash victim who passed away a short time later while in route to meet Life Flight at the Duchesne Airport. The officer also noted that there was a strong odor of alcohol coming from Curry’s breath. “This was a difficult situation,” shares UHP Lt. Todd Royce. “We were looking at 2 fatalities and 2 critical injuries at the time and we had to deal with [Curry]. That makes things harder on the first responders and the officers doing their jobs.” The accident occurred while a group of motorcyclists were traveling northbound on SR-35 Wolf Creek Pass when one bike went down and was struck by two more bikes at 10:30am. The crash involved three male riders and one female passenger. The surviving male was life flighted to a Wasatch Front hospital and remains in critical condition. *** Update and Victims’ Names Released by UHP*** There are no indications of impairment or high speeds. The crash is still under investigation. It appears that helmets were worn by all victims. He was flown to IMC hospital in critical condition and remains in critical condition. His passenger was Judith Murray 53 year old female from Wichita, Kansas and she is deceased.— Veh Num: 3 Year: 2000 Make/Model: Yamaha / Motorcycle Color: Red The driver was John Kwiatkowski 62 year old male from Conroe, Texas and he is deceased.
A total of six homes were evacuated in Talmage on Thursday as fire crews battled a new wildfire in the area. According to the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, the Twin Fire began near 25000 West and 4000 North in Talmage in the mid afternoon. Local fire departments responded and were supplemented by resources from the Dollar Ridge Fire.
An investigator for Uintah County has been charged with one count of Tampering With a Juror in Summit County’s 3rd District Court. 38-year-old Jayson L. Chamberlain was reportedly present at the Summit County Courthouse last December when potential jurors were being considered for the Flatlip, Flatlip, Rondeau trial that ended in mistrial. According to the charging documents, Chamberlain was present as an investigator for the prosecuting agency, the Uintah County Attorney’s Office, and was a potential witness for the State in the trial. On the day the tampering allegedly took place, there were approximately 60 prospective jurors on hand and they were questioned individually while the others remained in the courthouse lobby. “Throughout the day, the defendant made contact with many of the prospective jurors. Numerous prospective jurors described [Chamberlain] as being ‘chit-chatty’,” shares the charging documents. Charging documents include seven statements from prospective jurors who observed or had conversations with Chamberlain on that day; several of those alleging that Chamberlain talked about the jury process as well as his laptop and that it had very important information on it. One prospective juror told investigators that he overheard several of Chamberlain’s conversations with other prospective jurors in which Chamberlain gained knowledge that would be helpful for the prosecution during the jury selection process such as the jurors value system, family situation, and whether or not they wanted to serve on the jury and why. The charge of Tampering With a Juror was filed in 3rd District Court on July 17th. Chamberlain is scheduled for an initial court appearance on August 13th.
