KNEU 1250Thankfully it’s a slow year for West Nile Virus. The Utah Department of Health reports that there is a total of 40 mosquito pools this year in Utah that have tested positive for West Nile Virus in the state including one in Uintah County and one in Duchesne County. While it would be better there had been none this is still good news considering by this time in 2017, Utah had 105 positive mosquito pools reported.
Crews continue to fight the Dollar Ridge Fire in Duchesne and Wasatch Counties. An update on Tuesday evening reports that the fire acreage has been increased to 67,500 acres due to a more accurate mapping of the fire perimeter.
The Utah Attorney General’s Office has taken over the investigation of a toddler’s death in Duchesne County. Duchesne County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home north of Roosevelt on the morning of August 5th on a report of an unresponsive child.

While it’s still not clear what it means for local employees, local assets of QEP Resources Co. have been sold. Middle Fork Energy Partners, LLC announced their agreement in July to buy oil and gas production, undeveloped acreage, and related assets in the Uinta Basin from a subsidiary of QEP Resources Co. for $155 million dollars.
A fire that started on the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation on July 21st is now threatening structures. The Bear Trap Fire started on a ridge just north of Bear Trap Knoll, west of Big Springs in a very remote area that includes deep and rugged canyons.
While it is illegal and dangerous for the public to fly drones around wildfires, fire officials are able to utilize them in firefighting efforts. The Dollar Ridge Fire has a Type 3 firefighting team assigned to it as fire activity continues in the Ashley National Forest.
A study released this week provides details on a new species of Pterosaur discovered near Dinosaur National Monument. The study, published in the Nature, Ecology & Evolution journal, states that this new species had about a five foot wingspan and was preserved in sandstone.
