KNEU 1250Representative Rob Bishop has offered his thanks to the state of Utah for supporting legislation regarding Daylight Savings. Before the 2019 Utah Legislature wrapped up last week, the Utah Senate offered the final approval of a joint resolution supporting the Daylight Act, a piece of federal legislation introduced by Representative Bishop which would allow more flexibility for states regarding daylight saving time.
It’s time again for a unique annual favorite night out for many local families and this year brings a special treat. Lori Olmstead, the founder of the VernalUTAH Storytelling Festival, will be traveling from her home in Tennessee to serve as one of the event’s performers during the annual event being held this week. Olmstead was living in Vernal when she and a group of dedicated volunteers launched the festival in 2003 with the goal of bringing world-renowned talent to the Uintah Basin.
Pictures shared online of a structure fire in Duchesne County last week help show the intensity of what fire crews respond to. The Duchesne Volunteer Fire Department shared the images from Paul Spencer and Rick Hopkins on Sunday showing a blaze that took place last Tuesday.
Plans continue to move forward on a project that hopes to eliminate flooding events in downtown Vernal. The Vernal City Council approved a cooperative agreement with UDOT to begin design on the project during their Council meeting. They also approved moving forward with a $200,000 loan for Vernal City’s match for the project. UDOT committed almost half of the $2.6 million to update the downtown storm system and address flooding on Main Street.
Charges have been filed against the individual arrested in connection with an FBI operation in Uintah County on Thursday. Court records show that 50-year-old David Antillon of Vernal has been charged in 8th District Court with 1st Degree Felony Distribution of a Controlled Substance and Misdemeanor Manufacturing/Delivering of Drug Paraphernalia.
Nothing says we are in spring like a little tournament. Especially a corn hole tournament. The Uintah Basin Christian Academy is sponsoring a cornhole tournament event that will be taking place Saturday, March 16 at the Christian Academy. Be sure to check in at 6pm with the tournament starting at 6:30pm. For those that pre-register it will cost $50 per team and $30 per individual.
“Service Above Self.” That is the motto of the Rotary Club and though we might have heard the name some might not know what they are about. The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise. In other words lead life by service, in every aspect. From developing new friendships to running a business lead by service. Every objective is set against the “Rotary 4-Way Test” which has its members ask these questions.
While there was no official information released from the FBI on Thursday, law enforcement confirmed that local strike force as well as officers from Uintah County, Naples, and Vernal City assisted on an FBI operation on Thursday that included a search warrant of a Naples residence as well as a Vernal residence, during which a motorhome on the property started on fire.
Local leaders are exploring a unique economic development idea that, while still in its infancy, is gaining attention and support as a creative solution for workforce imbalance statewide. Uintah County Commissioner Bart Haslem has developed the concept being called Balance Utah which aims to make a reasonable work commute possible between Uintah County and the Wasatch Front.
Even though the snow is melting, the Uintah Basin is not out of the woods when it comes to high ozone. Director of the USU Bingham Research Center Dr. Seth Lyman announced Thursday that there is a reasonable likelihood that the Uinta Basin will exceed the EPA standard over the weekend and possibly into next week.
A talented local composer is gaining much deserved attention for her latest compositions. In February, composer Jill Boyd travelled to Phoenix where she was able to hear the world premier of “Voyager”, her 3rd orchestra piece performed by the West Valley Cadet Strings. For three consecutive years, Jill has been commissioned to write a piece for the group and during her visit was formally invited to create pieces for the group’s spring concerts each year.
The wildlife of Utah is one of the most precious commodities of the state. The Division of Wildlife Resources is looking for members of the community to help manage this commodity. DWR needs individuals to complete the five Regional Advisory Councils (RAC). Each RAC has six special interest members: hunters, anglers and trappers; those who don’t hunt or fish; ranchers and farmers; locally-elected public officials; federal land-management agencies; and the rest of the public at large.
