KNEU 1250Uintah Basin Medical Center has announced their New Year’s Baby for 2020. Jed Potts and Hope Trujillo welcomed Lyla Elaine, their healthy baby girl, to the world on New Year’s Day at 5:29am. Lyla weighed 6 pounds 10 ounces and was 20 ½ inches long.
On December 11th, a Uintah County 5-year-old-boy was “significantly” scratched by the family’s pet racoon. The incident led to the boy requiring emergency surgery. In light of this recent event, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and TriCounty Health Department have issued a press release concerning the legalities, and dangers, of keeping a wild animal as a pet. While raccoons, striped skunks, coyotes, and red foxes are not protected under Utah state law, individuals need a permit issued by the Utah Department of Agricultureo to house a wild animal in captivity.
Movement is being made on the promise to hire more school resource officers in Uintah School District. Uintah County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Brian Fletcher presented to the Uintah County Commission on Monday about Uintah School District and UBTech contracts. Fletcher shared that Uintah School District approved $309,000 dollars to Uintah County Sheriff’s Office to fund 3 full time deputies. There is currently 1 deputy so the Sheriff’s Office was asking for county approval to form 2 additional SRO positions to make a total of three.
Utah Shakespeare Festival has been traveling the state with a message they hope can make a difference with youth and Vernal is their next stop. The play, ‘Every Brilliant Thing’, is about a young man who learns at a young age of his mother’s attempted suicide and how, afterwards, he begins to keep a list of everything brilliant about the world and everything worth living for. The Utah Shakespeare Festival is presenting the play for free to the public in every school district in the state and Vernal’s Monday performance will be their last stop in northeastern Utah having previously performed at Terra Academy, Manila High School, and Union High School.
Last month Roosevelt City shared winter safety reminders including tips on practicing indoor fire safety. Stay warm and stay safe with the following tips. Get your chimneys cleaned. Don't leave any open flame or space heater unattended. Keep flammable materials away from candles, fireplaces, space heaters, etc. And please, please don't attempt to thaw frozen water pipes with a blow torch! It might work on your pipes, but it will also heat up all the infrastructure around the pipe and can easily cause a fire. Let’s all stay safe and warm this winter!
As Christmas leaves our rearview mirrors and we head into the dead of winter we might get the winter blues. Roosevelt City Parks Arts & Recreation wants to help keep the cheer going with Winterfest 2020. What started as a desire of local dentist, Dr. Doug Ogden, for more people to get outside and to have newcomers try cross country skiing has turned into an event that features a variety of activities throughout the month of January. Winterfest kicks off with Free Family Game Night on Saturday, January 4th.
There is a high probability that with 11.1% percent of those in the Uintah Basin suffering from it you might know someone with Type 2 Diabetes. In fact, it might be a family member. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1 out of 3 American adults have prediabetes, a serious health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetes. Factor in that with the fact that Type 2 Diabetes has a strong link to family history, as well as environmental influences and it makes sense why TriCounty Health Department is concerned.
Adjusting the 2019 budget and adopting the 2020 budget were the main focus of Monday’s Uintah County Commission meeting, both of which received a strong response during the accompanying public hearings. The Commissioners unanimously approved a Resolution Increasing the 2019 Budget to allow the transfer of $13,291,000 dollars from individual budgets into reserve funds. Clerk/Auditor Mike Wilkins provided a breakdown stating that the $13.2 million dollars is made up of $133,000 dollars to be moved from the Western Park fund balance, $226,000 dollars from the landfill, $2,331,000 dollars from the Uintah County Library, $1.5 million dollars from the Municipal Service Fund to be put toward the Public Safety Complex, $3 million dollars from the General Fund, and $4.64 million dollars from Capital Projects.
A new traveling exhibit will be on display at the Uintah County Heritage Museum, opening January 10th. The display, titled “Eres Poderosx/You Are Powerful”, is a collection of works from the Nopalera Artist Collection which shares the work of artists from different cultures and backgrounds. The artists featured are Izzy Fernandez, David Peralta, Ella Mendoza, Jorge Arellano, Veronica Perez, Andrew Alba, Lola Reyes, and Melissa Alvarez. They are all Latin American Youth who now live and thrive in the desert landscape of Utah.
State Road 35 over Wolf Creek Pass between Hanna and Francis is now closed for the season. The Utah Department of Transportation made the announcement of the seasonal road closure on Wednesday.
Outlaw Trail Theater has announced their highly anticipated musical production for the year 2020. This year’s show will be the world famous and award winning ‘South Pacific’ from Rodgers and Hammerstein. The original Broadway production premiered in 1949 and quickly became the second-longest running Broadway musical for that time, second only to Oklahoma! The production will be directed by Brian Litton and choreographed by Taunia Wheeler. ‘South Pacific’ will run on select dates from June 22nd through July 3rd. Uintah County and Vernal City continue to explore the options for a new agreement over future management and operation of the Vernal Regional Airport. The Uintah Transportation Special Service District drafted a letter to Uintah County and Vernal City last April requesting that they take back management and operation of the airport, stating that the request was “due to various conflicts that the district is facing such as budget constraints,” as well as citing the decline in mineral lease funding.
