UBAOG Calls For Community Volunteers

Uintah Basin Association of Government representative Lauren Schwanz announced during Tuesday’s Chamber luncheon that they are always in need of volunteers from the community to help with their programs. Volunteers are currently needed to learn more about tax law and help people with tax preparations. Last year, they were able to help 400 people and they would like to increase that number this year. Other programs in need of volunteers include the Foster Grandparent Program and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Altamont High School’s 2019-2020 Sterling Scholars

The Sterling Scholar program is meant to give recognition to students who show academic prowess. These outstanding students are judged not only on their GPA and class schedule, but also on their expertise in one of thirteen categories, their leadership experience, and their record of community service. Altamont’s Sterling Scholars for this year are Shalyce Gardner in Science, Ayla Myrin in Social Science, Hanna Myrin in Vocal Performance, Gracey Gardner in Agricultural Science, Kinly Panas in Dance, Shauri Thacker in English, Layla Jenson in Family and Consumer Sciences, and DeLanee Theener in Business and Marketing. Congratulations to these students.

Furever Buddy's Dog Rescue Hoping For Help to Keep Location

Furever Buddy’s Dog Rescue is doing amazing things for animals in need but are at risk of losing their location. The organization has been in their new facility for about 6 months and have been able to save hundreds more cats and dogs than they would have otherwise. Unfortunately for the organization, the building they have been leasing has several interested buyers and Furever Buddy’s director Melisa Stevenson is hoping they can find a way to purchase the building and stay there.

Moon Lake Electric Outage Has Residual Effects Throughout Basin

A Moon Lake Electric power outage affected businesses and neighborhoods on Wednesday. Downtown Roosevelt was without power for about 4 hours from 8am to noon. As a result of that outage, Strata Networks had services affected throughout the Uintah Basin including businesses throughout Duchesne and Uintah Counties that rely on Strata internet for running cards and other operations. At 12:15pm, Strata announced that services appeared to have been restored to their affected customers but unfortunately some customers continued experiencing issues.

Ozone Alert Issued For Friday, January 10th

The USU Uintah Basin Bingham Research Center has issued an ozone alert for this Friday. Ozone in the Uintah Basin is likely to exceed the National Ambient Air Quality Standard of 70 parts per billion on January 10th. “The Uintah Basin received significant snowfall during the Christmas Holiday week,” shares Research Center Director Dr. Seth Lyman. “ Since then, a persistent inversion layer has settled in and been fairly consistent, and the majority of the Basin is still covered with snow.

Uintah County Sheriff’s K9 Team on Upcoming Episode of ‘America’s Top Dog’

‘America’s Top Dog’ premiered last night on A&E and even if you missed it you’ll want to tune in to Episode 4 set to air later this month. Uintah County Sheriff’s K9 Riddick and his handler deputy Amy Leishman will make their television debut on January 29th. “In each episode, four teams of top police K9s and one civilian ‘underdog,’ along with their handlers, compete through a massive, three-round obstacle course that challenges their unique set of skills,” explains the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office.

New Council Members Sworn Into Office In Local Cities

Three new Roosevelt City Council members were sworn into office on Tuesday. Cody Aland, Don Busenbark, and Vince Reilley were sworn into their new positions by City Recorder Carolyn Wilcken during the Roosevelt City Council meeting on Tuesday night, shares a Roosevelt City press release. Aland, Busenbark, and Reilley are each set to serve a four-year term on the Council. A special thanks was also given during the meeting for outgoing Council members Dave Labrum, Aaron Weight, and Joe Burdick.

Rangely Police Officer Administers Life Saving Naloxone Dose

As more law enforcement agencies have adopted the practice of carrying naloxone for opioid overdose there have been more stories of lives being saved. The Rangely Police Department is the latest to share a success story. “On December 22nd at approximately 11:33 pm, Rangely Officer Block was dispatched to an address in Rangely in regard to a 29-year-old female who was not conscious and barely breathing. Officer Block arrived on scene at 11:37 pm.

Lane Frost Display at Uintah Heritage Museum Ahead of Lane Frost Challenge

A display remembering the legacy of Lane Frost is set up at the Uintah Heritage Museum in advance of the upcoming Lane Frost Challenge. The display includes pictures and personal items that Lane owned and wore during competition. Lane Frost is known the world over for the movie ‘8 Seconds’ which tells the story of the bull riding legend that meets a tragic end. Lane grew up on a Lapoint farm where he started riding dairy calves at the age of 5.
