KNEU 1250Lesha Coltharp, Director of Uintah County Travel and Tourism, gave a 2020 tourism report during the Vernal Chamber luncheon last week. Coltharp shared that even though Dinosaur National Monument was closed for April, May, and June of last year, there were 264,145 visitors in 2020.
Investigation is underway after a tragic incident in remote Moffat County. According to a media release from the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, the sheriff’s office was notified of an unoccupied vehicle stuck in the mud and snow near county road 54 in unincorporated Moffat County at about 8am on Thursday morning.
COVID-19 Transmission Index Levels have remained the same for this week with Uintah County at the High Level, Duchesne County at the Moderate Level and Daggett County at the Low Transmission Level.

A jury found a Duchesne County man ‘Not Guilty’ of Murder and Aggravated Assault in 8th District Court on Wednesday in a case of assault that resulted in the 2018 death of Sherry Lynn Melo. Michael Wallace Tuinman was a member of a group charged in the April 6th, 2018 assault and consequent death.
Work has resumed on the UDOT Main Street Drainage Improvement Project on Highway 40 in Vernal. According to an update from the Utah Department of Transportation, crews are finishing work in Section 1 from 400 West to Vernal Avenue and will be working in Section 2 and 3 as well.

The City of Craig has sworn in their new interim police chief. Michael Cochran was sworn in by the city judge during the Craig City council meeting on Tuesday evening. Following the swearing in, Interim Chief Cochran shared some of his philosophy as police chief.
In a press release, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources warns that there has been a salmonella outbreak that has caused the death of numerous songbirds. Salmonellosis is a bacterial disease that is transmitted through direct contact and is commonly spread when birds ingest feed contaminated with infected feces.
TriCounty Health Officer Kirk Benge caught up with Amy in the Eagle Country 105.5 FM studio this week with an update on COVID-19 vaccination efforts. “We are cruising along. We’ve been getting increased doses each week,” shares Benge. Since moving to larger locations for vaccine sites, TriCounty Health is distributing 400 to 500 vaccines a day now and that is in addition to the other partners like Walmart and Smiths.
A bill said to be one of the most important to the Uintah Basin passed in the Utah Legislature before it closed on Friday. SB176, Mineral Lease Funds Amendments, modifies provisions related to the expenditure of federal mineral lease revenues, addressing the legislative intent and purpose of the Community Impact Fund and allows their Board to make a grant or loan regardless of whether the project results in more than one impact or outcome.
