KNEU 1250It was a sad day back in April when Naples loveable triceratops mascot was demolished by a DUI driver but there is good news on the horizon. ‘Lanny the Dinosaur’ had greeted travelers on the roadside park near the Naples City Offices for less than a year before the crash saw him hauled off in early April of this year.
TriCounty Health Department is excited for a new school year working with students in the battle against big tobacco. Student leaders from Terra Academy and Manila, Uintah, Union, Altamont, and Tabiona High School were selected to be part of the health department’s youth program after writing essays on what they will do to combat tobacco in their area.
The Vernal Innovation Hub continues to be a place offering locals the tools to succeed in business. “The Hub has been open for nine months and is experiencing great success,” shares Vernal City Manager Quinn Bennion. “The Hub is a joint venture of Vernal City, Uintah County, Strata and GoUtah to encourage and support small business growth and development.”
The Division of Wildlife Resources has announced that due to recent rain storms decreasing the wildfire risk for several areas of Utah, the temporary ban on campfires and recreational target shooting with a firearm on most of its wildlife management areas has been removed.
Congressman Blake Moore has announced that he is a co-sponsor on an Act aimed at providing resources for expectant mothers. “I am honored to be an original cosponsor of Representative Fortenberry’s Care for Her Act,” shared Moore.
The Vernal downtown revitalization planning project is nearly complete with the final draft plan to be reviewed later this month. Grants were obtained a year ago to work on the downtown concepts and a public process ensued.
Uintah County Sheriff Steve Labrum is advocating for women’s safety and has announced a special event taking place next month with that in mind. Sheriff Labrum has teamed up with Rener and Eve Gracie for a training event being offered at Western Park in Vernal.
The process of redistricting is underway in Utah and it’s possible this process could harm representation in rural Utah. After gathering public input, the Utah Independent Redistricting Commission will create district maps for the Utah Legislature to consider.
State Representative Scott Chew gave a legislative report last week during the Vernal Chamber luncheon. He shared that in the spring a special session was used to ensure masks remain a personal choice and that another special session is possible in the near future to discuss Critical Race Theory.
School is back in session and the Duchesne Volunteer Fire Department is encouraging all to drive alert and use extra caution in school zones and cross walks. Their message shared information from the National Safety Council with the following to consider: Most of the children who lose their lives in bus-related incidents are 4 to 7 years old, and they're walking.
While there are many places in the Uintah Basin to get tested for COVID-19, TriCounty Health Department has announced a change to their testing availability. TriCounty Health used to be available for testing prior to traveling but that is no longer available.
