KNEU 1250A new support group is hoping to help locals affected by cancer through conversation and friendship. The newly formed “Let’s Talk” support group is being organized for the educational and emotional support of patients, survivors, caregivers and family affected by cancer. The group’s first meeting will be held on August 11th at 6:00pm at The Villa in Roosevelt.
National Park Service Rangers and an investigator from the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office recovered the body of a hiker on the northern boundary of Dinosaur National Monument on Tuesday. According to Chief of Visitor Services Dan Johnson, monument staff received word Tuesdaymorning that a 73-year-old woman had fallen sometime during the night off a 120 foot cliff.
Applications for Vernal’s Pioneer Day Parade are available to pick up at the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce office. The parade this year will be held on Saturday, July 23rd. Lineup for the parade is at 8:30am and the parade will run down Main Street at 10:00am.

Local administrators of the Utah State University 4-H Extension are helping to spread the word that changes to the Veterinary Feed Directive will have significant impacts on how producers obtain feeds containing certain animal medications.

It’s been nearly 5 years since local hero, Sgt. Daniel Gurr, was fatally shot while on patrol in Afghanistan and the community is invited to remember his sacrifice as well as all fallen soldiers at a 5K event on Friday, August 5th, the 5 -year anniversary of Gurr’s death. The event will be a nighttime 5K followed by a candlelight vigil at the Vernal Cemetery, which Daniel’s mother Tracy Bede(Bee-Dee) says will be especially meaningful because most of Sgt. Gurr’s battalion is planning to travel to Vernal to attend.
Utah’s Honor Flight program is preparing to send a new group of veterans to Washington D.C. this fall and Uintah Basin World War II, Vietnam and Korean War veterans are encouraged to participate. Local Honor Flight advocate and representative Jeff Berry presented to the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce this week about his amazing experience taking his 90-year-old father on a flight just weeks before he passed away. The Honor Flight program’s goal is to take all WWII, Korean War and Vietnam veterans on a free, well organized and high class trip to tour Washington D.C.
In the wake of national tragedies targeting police officers in recent days and weeks, locals are adding prayer to the list of ways to support local law enforcement officers. A community wide prayer gathering has been organized to petition God’s help in protecting law enforcement officers.
Rebel rousing may not be typical of Utahns but that didn’t stop Utah’s delegates at the Republican National Convention from having their voices heard this week. Senator Mike Lee led the fight for a roll call vote as Utah delegates sought to cast their votes for Ted Cruz, the state’s overwhelming winner in the caucus election in March. Regardless, the state’s 40 delegate votes went to Donald Trump due to a state party rule that prevents delegate votes from supporting a candidate no longer in the race.
West Nile Virus has spread locally with more confirmed mosquito pools in Uintah County. According to TriCounty Health representative Jeramie Tubbs, mosquito abatement has reported two pools in the Pelican Lake area and two pools in Jensen, both north and south.
Roosevelt Golf Course has several events coming up to shake up the golf experience for local enthusiasts. According to Roosevelt head golf pro Aaron Brown, the fun begins this Friday when the course’s first Night Golf event is being held. All are welcome to come Friday starting at 9:00pm to play on the course that will have lighted pins, glowing tees and unlimited challenges and fun for all golfers.
The cougar and bobcat populations in Utah are healthy and as a result DWR biologists are proposing several minor changes to the cougar hunting season. According to the Division of Wildlife Resources, biologists are concerned by the number of sheep and cattle that cougars killed last season. There were 60 incidents of cougars attacking livestock which is almost double the incidents from the year before. As a result, biologists are recommending that additional cougars be taken during the 2016 – 2017 hunting season.
