Anglers to the Rescue at Steinaker Reservoir

This summer and fall, Steinaker Reservoir north of Vernal will be reduced to a ‘mud puddle’ as important repairs are made to its dam, shares the Division of Wildlife Resources. Any fish not caught and removed will likely be lost and in an effort to save as many bluegill as possible, the DWR is asking for the help of any and all anglers. On June 7th, 8th, and 10th, bluegill ‘salvage’ events are organized in which anglers are asked to turn out, catch bluegill, and give the live fish to biologists who will be on hand. The bluegill will then be transported to the holding pond where they will remain until the reservoir is refilled. They will be placed back in Steinaker Reservoir to jumpstart the fishery at that time. Just as a reminder, it is illegal to move fish from one body of water to another. Only DWR biologists are allowed to do that but all are invited to come catch fish during the salvage events on June 7th, 8th, and 10th.
