Alissa Priebee is a 37 year old woman from Neola who 7 years ago suffered a severe brain stem stroke. She was placed on life support and developed "Locked-In Syndrome" a serious neurological condition in which a person may remain conscious and aware while losing most of her ability to move or communicate. Doctors told her family that she would remain in a permanent vegetative state and gave her a 1% chance of survival.
She has overcome these odds and has written several self-help manuals for stroke victims. Alissa shares her story, raising awareness of disability, the relationship between substance use and stroke risk. An inspirational quote from her book:
"Don't let someone else decide the limits of your recovery. Progress may be painfully slow, and life may look different afterward, but keep setting goals and keep showing up for yourself".
