Power System Safety and Wildfire Preparedness

It’s Wildfire Awareness Month and a message from the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands shares that wildfire preparedness also includes understanding how critical infrastructure operates during high-risk conditions. “During periods of extreme wildfire risk, Rocky Mountain Power may take additional operational safety steps, including emergency de-energization or a Public Safety Power Shutoff,” shares the message. “These actions involve temporarily shutting off power and are used only when necessary to protect public safety, but customers may experience outages. Preparing in advance for possible outages, especially during wildfire season, is an important part of readiness.” Rocky Mountain Power’s goal is to prevent ignitions and reduce fire spread. “Strong relationships, transparency, and coordination between utilities and public safety agencies are essential to keeping communities safe,” said Dick Garlish, president of Rocky Mountain Power. “Wildfire preparedness depends on strong partnerships and shared responsibility.” Customers are encouraged to keep contact information up to date for outage notifications and to report potential hazards when it is safe to do so.
