The hard work of a group of Uintah High School government students paid off Friday on Capitol Hill. Representative Scott Chew brought a team of UHS teacher Mary Moulton’s students on board for House Bill 117 that updates and amends the statute dealing with legal notices. The students conducted a survey, performed research, prepared a presentation and rebuttal arguments, and testified before the Business and Labor Committee on Friday. The bill was passed out of the Committee unanimously. “The kids did an excellent job of presenting findings and helping with the presentation,” says Representative Chew. Uintah High can be very proud of how they represented the school. The fact that it was passed unanimously is due to the kids being prepared and well spoken.” Representative Chew says one student’s answer to a question even swayed many on the Committee who were intent on changing public notices from print to a digital format. “This young man emphasized the need to get the public notices in the hands of those who need them and older generations are used to accessing those on paper rather than the internet,” says Chew. “His point brought out the fact that it needs to be about getting the information into the hands of those who need it.” HB 117 could be on the House floor by the end of this week and if passed will then move on to the Senate.
