Eagle View Elementary has enjoyed learning and growth so far this school year. 2018-2019 started with Chris Jones becoming the new principal after serving as vice-principal and Don Heath stepping in as vice-principal. Eagle View was one of three schools in the state to receive a $100,000 fitness center from the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils.
Valentine’s Day is coming up and the opportunities to celebrate your sweethearts are popping up on the calendar. One of the first is a ‘Will You Be My Valentine Dance’ being put on by the Crossroads Senior Center. Part Valentines dance, part fundraiser, the event will have a live band called Classic Country with lite refreshments.
As if the freezing temperatures and winter conditions in Wyoming weren’t enough cause for concern, imagine being in an emergency situation with a newborn baby and toddler twins. Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office released further details about the downed aircraft outside of Rock Springs on Monday that required a helicopter rescue.

A long time Basin tradition, Women’s Day Out is the perfect place to peruse goods, sample treats, and enjoy live entertainment. Joe and Teddie Evans hatched the idea for the event 18 years ago, wanting to offer something fun when winter blues are at their peak and there’s not much going on in the Basin. All these years later, the event continues to grow and don’t let the name fool you, all are invited including men, many who come each year as the best place to find the right Valentine’s present for their sweetheart. At last report, there were over 80 vendors participating. The Women’s Day Out is this Saturday from 10am to 4pm at the Uintah Conference Center.
James Hudson Main, Jr. was sentenced in 8th District Court this week in the shooting death of his father. Main Jr. originally faced a long list of charges in Utah and Colorado after a two day crime spree in October 2016 that included kidnapping, assault, and the aggravated murder of his own father. According to court documents, Main’s father called police on October 28, 2016 reporting that his son James Main, Jr. had stolen his gun and was “acting crazy.” Later that day, Main, Jr. abducted two individuals at gunpoint from a home north of Roosevelt. He forced them into a vehicle and had them take him to a Roosevelt residence where a struggle ensued and Main fired a shot and then took the vehicle and ran. The kidnapped man told police that Main Jr. had been bragging about shooting his father. As the investigation got underway, a well visit was performed and the body of Main’s 56-year-old father was discovered at his home in west Duchesne County, having been shot. Main was considered at large and dangerous during the following two day manhunt that included two high speed chases before Main was caught and held in Grand Junction. He was extradited to Utah shortly after to face the 1st Degree Felony Murder charge of which the jury trial was held earlier this month. The jury trial started on January 9th and on January 11th the jury found Main, Jr. Guilty of 1st Degree Felony Murder. On Monday, January 28th, Main, Jr. was sentenced to serve 15 years to Life in Prison. Main, Jr. will serve his sentence at the Utah State Prison.
Firefighters responded to a fire at an oilfield location north of Duchesne on Thursday morning. According to the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, no injuries were reported and one house in the area was temporarily evacuated as a precaution. At 12:15pm, Fire and Emergency Management Director Mike Lefler reported that Duchesne and Altamont firefighters were working to extinguish pockets of residual heat at the fire located near 6000 South and 19000 West. Flames were no longer visible at that point. By 1:00pm, the homeowner who had been evacuated was allowed to return home. More information will be shared once available.
The Uintah Future Farmers of America recently returned from area contests and they have come back triumphant. The Parliamentary Procedure team, made up of Bethany Christensen, Denim Lister, Bradley Wilson, Alexanndria Veibell, Sage Rothlisberger and Devony Cook brought home first place. Scotland Williams took 1st and McKenzie Lindsay 2nd in Creed Speakers and are now preparing for the state contest at the State FFA Convention in March.
Every year in January, the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy (UFRA) conducts a fire training school in St. George, Utah called Winter Fire School (WFS). The event is one of the largest of its type in the nation with more then 70 classes and over 700 students, instructors, and support staff. It also boasts a large vendor show with 60 some vendors representing major fire, rescue, safety, and EMS equipment sales and service companies from throughout the United States.
Freezing temperatures made it difficult to manage a fire called in Monday evening in Naples. According to the Naples Police Department, Naples Fire Department and Vernal Fire Department were dispatched to ‘Save On Auto’ at 1400 East 2000 Southat 9:10pm on Monday. When crews arrived, the main building of the business was fully engulfed.
The USU Bingham Research Center issued a local winter ozone alert on Monday, recommending that actions be taken to reduce ozone-forming emissions. The announcement states that there is a reasonable likelihood that ozone in the Uintah Basin will exceed the EPA standard within the next several days and that conditions associated with ozone exceedances will remain until at least this weekend.
