Vernal City officials are interested in hearing from its citizens as possible action is being considered to vacate 400 West next to the LDS Temple. According to their press release, city officials initiated the discussion and possible action to vacate 400 West as a way to reduce street maintenance costs and to increase pedestrian safety.

Neighboring Colorado Battling Own Round of Wildfires

Utah is not alone as fires threaten land and homes of many residents. Neighboring Colorado is also dealing with multiple wildfires. The Divide Fire, located 23 miles north of Craig, was mapped on Sunday at 19,947 acres. Moffat County Sheriff’s Office reports that hot, windy weather pushed the fire to over 13,000 acres on Friday and reached 40 percent containment on Saturday.

Victim Identified in Harpers Corner Road Fatality

The identity of a Dinosaur, Colorado woman who died in an accident in Dinosaur National Monument has been released. According to an updated press release from Park Ranger Sonya Popelka, 18-year-old Maria Blakley was found deceased at the scene of a single vehicle accident along Harpers Corner Road.

Lightning is to blame for a fire in Uintah County that started over the weekend. According to Uintah County Fire Marshal Jeremy Raymond, a lightning strike near Blue Mountain caused the blaze on Saturday evening which was initially reported as 3 acres. Crews from Jensen Fire Department, BLM, and the state responded.

U.S. Marshals Say Wanted Man Last Spotted in Vernal

Authorities say a Mississippi man, suspected of murdering his wife, was last seen in the Vernal area. 61-year-old Charles Eugene Bowman is being sought by the US Marshals Service Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team. Bowman’s wife was last seen alive on May 17th but her remains were found on the couple’s Mississippi property, reports KSL.

Dollar Ridge Fire Nears 50,000 Acres; 30 Percent Contained

The weekend began to see successful containment operations of the Dollar Ridge Fire as Mother Nature gave a hand to the hard working firefighters. Utah Fire Info reports that as of Sunday, July 8th, the fire had reached 49,789 acres, was 30 percent contained, and had 784 fire personnel on the job.

The Ducks Unlimited Fishing Derby on Flaming Gorge last month raised funds for North American waterfowl conservation. The event, held June 21st and 22nd, raised over $20,000 dollars.“Our 7th Annual derby had great success!” shared Committee Chairman Jordynn Hewitt.

Muddy Fun and a Colorful Run at Annual Roosevelt Event

The annual Redmud Run in Roosevelt on the 4th of July had a thoroughly colorful start and finish. Color powder was set up at the Constitution Park stage where the runners take off. In a puff of neon yellow, pink, blue, and green, the group ran the perimeter of the grass where they encountered a massive slip-n-slide, pools of water, sprinklers, and other water fun.

Ways to Help Dollar Ridge Fire Evacuees

Hundreds of our Uintah Basin neighbors have been displaced after evacuating their  properties due to the Dollar Ridge Fire. Shelters have been set up with the Red Cross providing for disaster emergency needs but there are many ways the community can help. These families are in need of housing for free or extensively reduced rates, utilities assistance, and various new home items.

Uintah Fire District Provides Fireworks Report and Update on the Maine Fire

The fires throughout the region didn’t keep citizens from celebrating with fireworks in areas throughout the Basin. According to the Uintah Fire District, fire crews in Uintah County responded to 5 calls related to fireworks during Wednesday’s celebrations. Vernal City Fire had 3 calls, Naples City Fire had 1 call, and Lapoint-Tridell Fire Department had 1 call.
