A group of bright Altamont students put their spelling skills to the test last week. 26 spellers took to the stage on Friday for Altamont Junior High School’s starting competition of Scripps National Spelling Bee. The bee had 14 rounds plus a final round, which requires the first-place speller to spell a last word correctly. If the word is incorrect, another round will take place. First place was eighth grader Savannah Brotherson, with seventh graders Sydney Nielson in second and Sam Wilcox in third. Savannah and her family will make the choice whether or not to send her on to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. next May. Congratulations to the winners of the spelling bee!
