Winter the Best Time to Hunt Cottontails

by | Jan 18, 2017 | News | 0 comments

Cottontail hunting is in full swing with both seasoned hunters and newcomers having success this season. Cottontails are found across Utah and the terrain where they can be found is easy to hunt. “Cottontails usually hide under rocks or brush,” shares DWR Game Coordinator Jason Robinson. “Sometimes, they’ll even hide in burrows. Draws that have tall sagebrush or rabbit brush in them also have loose, deep soil that the rabbits can often find burrows in. Rabbits will also hide under large rocks, or they’ll hide in the crevice of a rock.”

Cottontails feed early in the morning and late in the afternoon. In between feeding time they often sun themselves on flat rocks, often the same rock they use to hide beneath. Cottontail season runs until February 28th. For more information, visit
