Local hockey fans will be excited to hear that the ice rink at Western Park will soon undergo a remodel that should be complete before hockey season in the fall. Likewise, local theater fans will be excited to hear that the outdoor amphitheater is also on the list for remodel with some upgrades taking place in time for the upcoming Outlaw Trail production opening in June. Uintah County Commissioner Bart Haslem explains that the upgrades will be entirely funded by federal grant money, meaning no local tax dollars are involved. The ice rink has been well used, shares Commissioner Haslem, and the time has come to bring it to a newer standard to support the significant local hockey community which has only grown with the addition of the semi-pro hockey team last year, the Oilers. The remodel will rearrange the layout and add on to the entry with concessions to be moved up front. More seating will be added, as well as locker rooms, showers, and storage. Restrooms will be for multi-use as the events at the amphitheater will also have access to them. The upgrades to the amphitheater will include a new sound system and lighting system which are expected to be complete in time for the June production of Newsies. After the production concludes, the hope is to start construction on a new stage and new seating. Further details will be reported, including the final bid amounts, as they are announced.
