West Nile Virus season is underway with multiple counties reporting activity, including in northeastern Utah. West Nile Virus is spread by mosquitos and so mosquito pools are tested for the virus by officials. So far in the month of July, Uintah County has reported 3 positive mosquito pools along with Box Elder, Cache, Salt Lake, and Utah Counties also having positive reports. So far the virus has stayed with the source and there have been no positive human, horse, or bird cases of West Nile Virus reported. The Utah Department of Health will update their report weekly until the West Nile Virus season is considered over sometime in the fall. The Utah Department of Health and Human Services encourages the public to take precautions to protect against West Nile Virus. Limit outdoor activities from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active, and use insect repellent. Wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and socks in areas where mosquitoes are active. Spray clothes with repellent for extra protection. Eliminate pools of water as much as possible as mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Keep doors, windows, and screens in good condition. If a person develops symptoms from West Nile Virus it usually includes high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, and disorientation. See a healthcare provider if symptoms develop.
